About Roberta
I am a PhD student in Geophysics at the University of Canterbury, with a strong academic background in physics and mathematics. Over the past several years, I have gained experience tutoring students at both high school and university level, helping them improve their understanding, confidence, and exam performance.
My work at university has trained me to explain complex concepts in a clear, structured, and accessible way. I understand the common difficulties students face, and I know how to guide them step by step towards solid understanding.

I believe that a good lesson is not just about explaining concepts, but about making them click. My goal is to help students build confidence and truly understand what they are doing, rather than memorizing procedures.
I usually adapt my teaching style to each student. Some students need step-by-step guidance, others benefit more from intuition and visual explanations. I often combine both: starting from the physical meaning or intuition behind a concept, and then moving to the mathematical formulation.
I like to work interactively — asking questions, encouraging students to think out loud, and guiding them to the solution rather than simply giving it. This helps them become independent and more confident over time.
A typical lesson lasts at least 60 minutes, but I’m flexible depending on the student’s needs, and it usually includes:
- A quick review of previous material
- Explanation of new concepts in a clear and intuitive way
- Practice through exercises together
- Independent attempts with guidance
I can also help with assignments, exam preparation, and revision sessions.
