About Arthur

I am a musician and intern at Old Street Studios and I start a music production course at IMW in January. In 2020 my sister and I released a self-produced album ‘Where the Summer’s Sung’ with 4 tracks played on the BBC and hope to work on new songs at Old Street Studios where I work. I wrote and produced the album, so I am familiar with Ableton DAW software.

I love to learn, so reading and watching documentaries have always been a passion of mine and with my philosophy degree I was able to explore my breadth of interests, combining my mathematical, logical and problem-solving mind with my creative artistic sensibility. I also play sports from squash, tennis, cricket, football, swimming and badminton.

As an enthusiastic, curious person with a creative and logical mind, I am energized by learning and relaying inspiration to others. Since attaining my 120hr TEFL qualification in 2017, I have taught children English and Maths tuition 8+,11+, and 13 + and GCSE level from 6 – 15 years old which lead me to work as a teaching assistant at Eaton House Belgravia in 2021.
I now want to apply the skills I have learnt towards guitar tuition.

I believe for a lesson to be successful, a tutor needs to be organized, adaptable and personable to inspire their students. Firstly, I try to nurture an autodidactic attitude. As tutoring is predominately 1:1, it is essential for me to establish a relationship, where the student will be comfortable asking questions. By engaging with the tutee as a person, ascertaining what motivates and excites them, I try to create a stimulating environment, relaying the values of resilience and a tenacious desire to learn outside of lesson time.

Secondly, I try to shape lessons to best suit my student’s individual interests, goals and learning styles. My approach to teaching is founded upon two core beliefs; that every student is different, and that no topic is inherently boring. My lessons are therefore creative and flexible as I model my lessons on an individual basis to spark interest and maintain attention.

Lastly, I create a structure to nurture a student towards their goal. From personal academic experience, I’ve seen how goal setting is core to success. By breaking down difficult topics into manageable tasks, my student’s confidence, resilience, and ability to focus are greatly improved.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

When I first went to Secondary school, my mum was pushing me to learn an instrument. Naturally as a teenager I was reluctant but she pushed and pushed and I ended up having lessons with a guy called Nick, who turned out to be the catalyst for my musical journey. Immediately I learnt 'Hey Joe' a great song in itself and a brilliant way to learn guitar chords, I was hooked.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I have never tired of Pink Floyd, they always inspire awe in me.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

A complete understanding of the guitar fretboard, a complete understanding of chords and a complete understanding of basic music theory.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Piano, two hands, two feet whilst reading at the same time!
  • What are your keys to success?

Learning music you love, which then inspires you to practise
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Jimi Hendrix, It would be sensational to get a few tricks and tips from him. John Lennon, I would love to know some unknown stories about the Beatles and his career. Fredrick Chopin, he would be the ultimate late night musician to meet in a bar, to hear him play would be incredible.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Well I never went to music school, but I have just started a Music production course at IMW. I have learnt that you can do it all online, but it is not as fun and as stimulating and as easy!
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I am passionate and have my own method of teaching music more by ear, similar to how musicians such as The Beatles learned. There are so many ways to learn, but hopefully I can inspire an attitude of improvisation and the basics of music to set you on your way.
