About Aoife

I am currently a PhD student at UCL, with my research focussing on using Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Medicine and Surgery. Prior to this I obtained an MSc in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at UCL, and a BSc in Physics from Imperial College London, achieving high firsts in both. I also studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Music at A-level.

My studies have given me cross-disciplinary experience in Mathematics, Physics, Biomedical Sciences, Engineering and Computer Science, and I am able to tutor in these subjects from Key Stage 3 all the way up to undergraduate degree level. I also have experience in several programming languages (Matlab, Python, C, C++, Java) and am available to assist with this as well.
I am happy and friendly and enjoy engaging with students in Mathematics and the Physical Sciences. Having worked with students of all levels I believe I am successful at getting the best out of students while maintaining an encouraging and supportive learning environment. I have particular experience working with students that lack confidence in these areas, and I believe my calm teaching approach has helped them to gain confidence in their ability alongside improving their performance.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring Mathematics and Physics will be predominantly through problem solving and going through exam style questions together. From experience I found that talking and working through questions cements the content into the students long term memory much more effectively. I can work in parallel to what the student is learning in school, that way creating a solid understanding if each individual topic, and providing that essential 1-1 support.

I have a calm and friendly approach to tutoring, whereby we work at the students desired pace and they are encouraged to ask as many questions as they wish in a safe environment. Often I find that this builds the students confidence and they are more likely to have conviction in their ability without the fear of getting something wrong.

Sessions typically last around 30 minutes for pre-GCSE, and 40 - 1 hour for GCSE and A level. Longer sessions can be arranged towards exam periods.

I have over 8 years experience private tutoring Mathematics and Physics, with great success. Students I have tutored and mentored have obtained atleast 2 grades higher than predicted at GCSE level and atleast 1 grade higher at A-level. I have successfully mentored A-level students to gain places on some of the most competitive STEM courses at top Universities such as UCL, KCL and Imperial.
