For economics I teach students in their under graduate courses. I stress on explaining with diagrams and example. For example, if we have to consider the impact of British trade policy on pre-independence Indian economy, I would explain the unilateral free trade impact using Production possibility frontier diagram showing use of import tariff by Britain on Indian exports led to deindustrialiastion in India.
