About Frank

I remember what it was like to struggle with something that other students found easy; this didn't just happen in school; it happened in college and, to my annoyance, still happens in my adult life. Learning to ask for help is a life skill; accepting the help, following the advice while being attentive, open-minded and respectful doesn't diminish your skills or who you are.

About the lesson

I start from student engagement, whether sight/high frequency words, sentence construction, paragraph construction or essay. Sometimes the subject matter is the student's choice; sometimes the subject matter is instructor-determined. Either way, without engagement, completion is difficult, success unlikely.

I've learned that literacy can be difficult in any of its parts, or all of them: listening, speaking, reading, writing and all of their individual components. There's also knowing to code-switch. Talking to friends is different than talking to teachers, and writing changes based on audience.

I've used manipulatives, body movement and even spur-of-the-moment songs not just for engagement but for retention.
