About Elliot

I am an Education and History student studying at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston. I am in my final year at university and am looking to gain further experience of teaching.

My previous teaching experience is limited to Early Years and Year 1 Primary placements via my course at university. However, the knowledge of History, especially American History, that I have gained from being at university, combined with the Education side of the course where we study everything from teaching methods to educating children with Special Educational Needs has provided me with the means to teach on a one to one level. Now all that is left is to have the opportunity to put this into practice and gain more experience.

About the lesson

Methods that I encountered and picked up whilst on my placements that can be transferred to a higher educational level were, always keep the student(s) focused, this can be done by keeping the tasks varied, light-hearted and fun; the moment the lesson starts to become mundane, the more the student(s) lose focus and the less information they take in.

My methodology for teaching History would be dependant on the pupil(s) I am teaching. The first lesson or two would be generalised lessons to get a feel for the way the pupil(s) process the information I am telling them. After that, the lessons would be tailored for the pupil(s). So if it was a one to one lesson, if I found that the pupil responded and took more of an interest in the subject by doing something practical, in the next lesson I would bring in props relating to that subject matter or give them activities to do. If the pupil responded more by listening, I would perhaps bring in text books and speak more as well as give them verbal quizzes.
