About Makala

Hi there, My name is Makala. I a 28 year-old with a passion for all things biology, medicine, and just science in general. I have a BSc in general science specialising in microbiology and zoology. I also have a Masters in Biotherapeutics. I achieved a 1st class honours in both of my degrees. I also have a 120+ hour TEFL certificate, so teaching English is also in my portfolio. Since my masters, I since been working as a research assistant in the department of clinical medicine in Trinity College Dublin, where our lab specialised in autoimmune diseases. I am very flexible and willing to teach at all levels, so please do reach out if you have any questions and I will try my very best to assist in any way I can :)

About the lesson

I have taught online zoom classes to local Slovenian children during a year abroad. When also in Slovenia I worked with children with special needs in a local primary school where I carried out many English classes and global culture lesson.
I was a laboratory demonstrating for 3 years in college, assisting with experiments and the teaching material in microbiology, botany and immunology.

I have been a lab manager and supervisor of 2nd year med students when working as a research assistant, which included leading research projects for pharmacology modules and guiding the students with their experiments.
In terms of lessons and teaching method: I would go through the curriculum/material at an appropriate pace for the student so that they feel constantly engaged but also comfortable with their ability to retain the information moving forward and ensure no student feels out of their depth. I am always happy to answer any questions or concerns and if a particularly difficult topic arises, I would make sure to provide extra material covering to basics so that the topic can be gradually built upon rather than overwhelming anyone. At the end of the day though when each session is over my goal is that my student will feel they know are much more confident with the revised topics and feel they could explain it to someone else with ease. My approach is to challenge students in a relaxed, more enjoyable manner where the difficult topics can be covered without being a difficult experience

The typical lesson length 1 hour but I am incredibly flexible to accommodate various lesson durations
