About John
I am a career English teacher who has been in the classroom for 30 years. I love helping students with essay writing, grammar (about which I have written a primer for students), analyzing rhetoric (primarily for AP Language and Composition prep), and developing close reading skills. I specialize in prepping students for the Reading and Writing sections on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, and I have a great track-record of success.

As my CV indicates, I have spent my career in private secondary schools, where I have taught thousands of highly motivated students whose main objective is matriculation to the nation's top colleges and universities. In addition to teaching my students advanced courses in British and American Literature (which include many essays of analysis and synthesis of secondary materials), I help them to prepare for benchmark tests, such as AP Language and Composition, the PSAT, SAT and ACT. My technique begins with my own protocol to diagnose each student's strengths and weaknesses in reading and writing. I then design lessons that attack the weaknesses and build on strengths. Conferencing over papers and essays is essential, in my view, as is helping students develop their own "voice" in writing. This begins with writing that models professional language and rhetorical techniques, and then moves to lessons that help the student toward his/her own style. Helping students understand their individual reading speed and its relation to comprehension is important when it comes to their completing homework assignments, as well as prepping for the reading sections of the ACT or SAT (and getting a good idea about which test might be the right one), so I initiate my classes with activities that help to determine these things for my students. The ultimate objective is to get students to understand what clear communication is and how to produce it.
