When I tutor, my main focus is understanding and engagement. I believe in making the subject material feel relevant, approachable, and, most importantly, interesting. Here’s how I approach it:
-Active Learning: I don’t just talk at you or give you information. Instead, I engage you in the learning process. I encourage you to ask questions, explain things back to me in your own words, and solve problems step-by-step. This way, we can identify areas that need more attention, and you can actively take control of your learning.
-Real-World Connections: I aim to tie what you're learning to real-life examples. If we're studying English, for example, I might compare literature to movies, social media posts, or current events. This makes concepts stick better because you see their applications beyond the classroom.
-Personalized Approach: Everyone learns differently, so I adapt to your style. Some students might prefer visual aids, while others might benefit from discussing things out loud. I get to know what works best for you and adjust accordingly.
-Focus on Understanding, Not Just Memorization: Instead of just getting through material for the sake of passing tests, I want to make sure you truly understand the subject. This might mean breaking things down into smaller chunks, using analogies, or practicing multiple examples.
Typical Lesson Plan
A typical lesson will vary based on what you need, but here’s a general structure:
-Warm-Up (5-10 minutes): I start by reviewing what we covered last time, and we’ll go over any homework or practice that you did since our last lesson. This helps refresh your memory and build continuity.
-Lesson Introduction (10-15 minutes): I introduce the new topic, using a hook to engage you. For English, this might be analyzing a quote from a book or article, or exploring a specific literary device or grammar rule.
-Guided Practice (15-20 minutes): I’ll walk you through a few examples to model how to approach the material. In English, this could involve breaking down a passage of text, working through a writing prompt together, or analyzing a piece of literature.
-Independent Practice (15-20 minutes): You’ll apply what we’ve just covered, either through a practice exercise or a mini-project. During this time, I’ll give you space to work, but I’m available to answer any questions or offer guidance if you get stuck.
-Wrap-Up & Homework (5-10 minutes): We’ll finish up with a quick review of what you learned, and I’ll assign some practice to do on your own. I might give you a list of questions to answer or an exercise to work through before the next lesson.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
-Focus on Critical Thinking: I don't just want you to memorize things. I want you to understand the why behind concepts, so you can apply them independently. This works especially well in subjects like English, where interpretation and analysis are key.
-Patience and Empathy: I understand that sometimes it takes time to grasp new material, and that’s okay. I’m patient and will explain things in different ways until you understand. My goal is to help you build confidence in your abilities.
-Motivation and Positivity: Sometimes, students struggle with staying motivated, especially in tough subjects. I’m big on celebrating small wins and pushing through challenging moments together. By staying positive, I help you keep a growth mindset and stay focused on improvement.
