in my lessons I like to have three areas I focus on
1. Technique:
a. Warm-up exercises: Begin each class with exercises that focus on developing and improving specific techniques. For instrumentalists, this could involve finger positioning, scales, arpeggios, or bowing techniques. For vocalists, it could include vocal warm-ups, breathing exercises, and diction drills.
b. Repetitive practice: Provide students with targeted exercises and drills to reinforce proper technique. This could involve repetitive finger patterns, vocal exercises focusing on specific vocal registers or articulation, or other exercises tailored to the instrument or voice type.
2. Knowledge:
a. Music theory: Introduce and explain essential musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, harmony, scales, chords, and key signatures. Help students understand how these concepts apply to their instrument or voice.
b. Analysis: Analyze different musical pieces, including both famous compositions and student-selected works. Guide students in identifying musical elements, structures, and patterns within the music, helping them develop a deeper understanding of how music works.
3. Application and Creativity:
a. Learning tunes: Select a variety of enjoyable songs or pieces that align with the students' skill level and interests. Focus on applying the techniques and musical concepts learned earlier to perform these pieces. Provide guidance on interpretation, expression, and musicality.
b. Composition: Encourage students to explore their creative side by composing their own music. Teach them the basics of songwriting, including melody writing, chord progressions, and lyrics. Foster their creativity and guide them in expressing their unique musical ideas.
