I like to commence my tutoring sessions with a quick Warm-Up ["Do Now"] problem that should be accessible to students to get started on their own (considering grade level, comprehension level, etc.).
After going over the Warm-Up problem, I ask students if they have any classwork/homework problems from their math/physics
class that they would like to share.
Going over their assignment usually takes the remainder of the tutoring session, though sometimes a quick "Mini-Lesson" (or review lesson) is necessary, depending on student's comprehension of the lesson's topic or objective.
Throughout the session, I like to "gradually release" the student and assess how well they are able to think through & solve the problems independently. In my experience, I have learned how to quickly spot and address misconceptions and calculation/syntax errors.
