About Hein

I am an experienced researcher and lecturer in the fields of epidemiology and social medicine. I currently teach on the medical curriculum at the University of Leeds, introducing undergraduate and post-graduate students to quantitative research methodology. As a researcher, I have worked with several of the large population-based cohorts in the UK (e.g., ALSPAC, the Millennium Cohort Study, Understanding Society) as well as routinely collected patient data (i.e., CPRD). My main area of expertise is the use of causal inference methods in social, epidemiological, or clinical settings, but these methods are generally applicable to a wider range of settings (e.g., economics, business, politics). I am intimately familiar with all stages of the research process, and am a published author in my field. In teaching research methodology, I try and establish a firm conceptual understanding of the methods (e.g., what are they for? how do they work?) before introducing a more technical approach to the topic where appropriate and/or needed. I firmly believe that statistical analysis doesn't need to be difficult. It's all about breaking complex problems into smaller parts, solving these independently, and then putting them back together again. Much of it is common sense. If my approach sounds interesting to you, please feel free to get in touch to discuss the specifics.

I take a student-centred approach to teaching, ensuring I have a sound understanding of your needs before proceeding with a lesson/tutorial plan. In general, I take a problem-based approach to clearly link the research to the social, epidemiological, or clinical problem it is designed to investigate. Research can be overwhelming when engaging with it for the first time. Statistical methods can be tricky to master and coordinating the overall process can be a challenge. For example, how do you decide what data to analyse? What guides your choice of statistical methods? How do you decide when your analysis is complete? What are the limitations to what you have done? And how do you go about writing up your findings in a clear and transparent way? I have over 10 years' worth of professional experience in quantitative research working for several of the UK red-brick universities. I have a PhD in Social Statistics and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (a professional organisation which regulates teaching in higher education). My lessons are best suited to university students at the undergraduate, post-graduate, or pre-doctoral levels. I have practical experience in supervising students at all these levels. If you are interested, please feel free to contact me at your convenience and I will get back to you as I am able to.
