Worked as a Cabin Counsellor at Gwynn Valley Summer Camp for consecutive summers following my graduation from high school.
My role entailed working long hours (12-hour days, 6 days a week for 3 months). The main part of my role entailed supervising and living with 8 children in my cabin group and being the facilitator for a fun and safe experience which allowed them to develop as young people.
Worked across a range of roles in the camp, helping with general labour work and delivering a variety of sessions for children and young people (ages 5 to 15) including kitchen duties, landscaping, climbing instruction, waterfront skills and more.
NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) – Scandinavia, July 2019 and New Zealand, March 2020
Participated in a university extra-curricular programme called NOLS which entailed camping with the most basic conditions in unknown environments for a total of 30 days each course. The first programme we trekked across Scandinavia, the second was across New Zealand South Island. Completion of these two courses gained me an extra fourteen university credits.
My time on NOLS accelerated my personal development greatly, gaining many new life skills such as wilderness first aid training (50 hours of training), fire building, survival skills, environment awareness skills and much more.
NOLS also developed my interpersonal skills greatly, such as teamwork, communication and patience.
