About Shannan

I’ve been signing since I was very little. I am hard of hearing since childhood. I have Deaf family members, my best friend is Deaf. My passion in life is sharing ASL and Deaf culture with others. There is nothing I would love more than to help you learn and help you find success. I have been teaching for many years and have helped countless students reach their goals. I look forward to meeting you!

About the lesson

I love to teach! When I first started university I thought I wanted to be a ASL interpreter. Then my ASL professor offered me a job assistant teaching, I never looked back! I found my calling. That was over 10 years ago. To this day, all I want to do is help people learn this amazing expressive language.

Perfect! Shawn explains things well, describing the movements and repeating when asked. Shawn is organized with her lesson plans and has a structured and friendly approach to teaching beginners ASL. She made me feel comfortable which means a lot as I'm pretty anxious at times and have difficulties with focus. She also explains pieces of deaf culture while teaching to give a fuller context to the language and educate hearing students so they can interact with people in the community in a respectful manner and approachable manner.

I've taken her in-classroom lessons in the past as well as her online classes. She is a solid teacher with a great breadth of ASL knowledge, and conveys concepts with ease. Her lessons not only include what you would expect from a language class with vocab and grammar, but also incorporates aspects of Deaf culture and history, making the entire process immersive and relevant. She also brings in regional dialect differences so you know you won't be restricted to stiff, formalized language.
