About Madison

I worked with a group at UNCA called STRIVE that helps students at the Hillcrest Community Center. It was a relationship that allows UNC Asheville students to improve the development of at-risk youth in the Asheville City School system through the implementation of diverse educational and cultural experiences and activities. I worked extensively with AIM club over the past year, including during my time student teaching. It is a service/social club for ESL/Migrant students in the Henderson county school system. I volunteered at Bounty and Soul (a non-profit organization in the Black Mountain Community) on numerous occasions and served as a translator and an interpreter of documents. As part of the education program at UNCA I served as a volunteer AVID Tutor, I had the opportunity to work directly with students in Asheville City Schools; specifically, Asheville High and Asheville Middle. AVID provided me with a foundation in methodology and pedagogy that had an impact on not only the students but their families. This program was very similar to the STRIVE program, the only difference was it was in a school setting versus a community setting.

About the lesson

I became a teacher because I knew the impact it could make, I've had many teachers who changed my life. It is because of exceptional teachers that I have continued my education, they inspired me to become a teacher myself, I saw the impact and I wanted to imitate that passion. I worked as an AVID tutor and was an integral part of the AVID curriculum in grades 6-12 (my concentration was mostly at Asheville High). I worked with students in the classroom two days per week, and facilitated small group discussions based on work students were doing in their core academic classes (Spanish, English, History). Through this I completed the field component of my Education 314 class. I completed extensive training in AVID methodology. I believe that every child has potential and sometimes they needs help seeing that potential.
