About Jan Tobias
I obtained my undergraduate degree in biology with a minor in physics from the University of Bonn in Germany, followed by a master's in microbiology conducted at Bonn and Harvard, where I also received rigorous training as a data scientist. I was awarded multiple competitive scholarships and graduated in the 2% of my year. After my studies, I worked as a research scholar at Harvard Medical School on the engineering of bacterial strains for CO2 sequestration and mineral purification, resulting in publications, patents and conference presentations. As a Graduate student I am now working on the computational design of pathways and proteins for the production of synthetic compounds as well as their experimental verification.
In addition to a strong theoretical foundation in physics, data science, biology, and chemistry, I have several years of experience applying these tools in research and conveying them effectively through teaching.

I teach by starting from first principles and building strong intuition before moving into deeper, more formal understanding. I explain concepts through visualizations and real-world examples, then reinforce and deepen that understanding through exercises, quizzes and by connecting different topics, so you don’t just learn them separately, but see how they fit together and build on one another. My goal is to help you develop a true and deep conceptual understanding, a clear framework for solving problems and improving your performance in exams. My lessons are interactive and tailored to you, whether you’re working through a specific course or aiming to build a broader, more connected understanding across subjects. I can support you with material from your current classes, or we can follow a structured course designed by me if you want to go beyond your curriculum or prepare for the upcoming school year.
