About Sarah
In almost a decade of teaching, I find myself lamenting that I still have to remind students to arrive on time, bring the proper materials, and pay attention to lectures. Despite admonitions and penalizing grades, students still use cellphones, do the bare minimum to pass an assignment, and struggle with constructive criticism. I often worry, how will they ever succeed in a professional workplace with these behaviors? So when my college introduced extracurricular workshops to help students develop professional behavior, I decided to go one step further and incorporate professionalism into all my courses.

Over a long career I supervised a number of student teachers. The University’s tutor later admitted sending the “difficult ones” to me. One comment I got from them on at least two occasions when they observed my classes was “I don’t know how you get away with it”. This I interpreted as “you’re breaking all the rules we were taught at the University”.
I got away with it because students wanted to be in my classes, they enjoyed my lessons and they got better results in external examinations than they got in their other subjects. A regular stream of inappropriate, ironic and sarcastic comments was just the icing on the cake
