About Skyler

I teach because I want students to know the reward of music.

Making progress as a consequence of sustained focus and engagement in a creative skill is life-changing.

Learning builds confidence. Confidence that is lasting and transferable, not just to other instruments but to other aspects of life.

About the lesson

I believe in this format for learning music:

Learn a rhythm instrument such as piano or guitar or bass . This will get students acquainted with chord theory. I can teach whichever is preferred.

Learn a lead instrument such as trumpet, harmonica or guitar. This will get students acquainted with improvisation in a blues and jazz context.

When I was learning I first made my way through a Beatles chord book, learning to sing along while dissecting the how's and why's of each chord change and melody. We can do this for any songs the student prefers, although I do think that being acquainted with the Beatles catalog is something like a rite of passage for musicians.

Ultimately, my instruction leads towards writing and composition, with an emphasis on cooperation and coordination with other musicians.
