About Malcolm

I recently graduated from Kenyon College, where I worked as the Lead Tutor for Calculus and Linear Algebra in Kenyon’s Math and Science Skills Center (MSSC), which offers free peer tutoring services to other undergraduate students. I was the lead tutor for Calculus and Linear Algebra classes for three years. Before Kenyon, I tutored mathematics and Spanish at the high school, middle school, and elementary levels. As an experienced tutor at the MSSC, I took a leadership role in guiding other tutors through our pedagogical approach, which includes answering questions with other questions, fostering discussions and collaboration with peers, and focusing on a strategic approach to organizing information, choosing a strategy, and evaluating answers to tackle difficult problems. Understanding these strategies and how to apply them to help students gain confidence in their own capabilities has helped me grow as a tutor, and as a student myself. I have graduated from Kenyon, and now will be attending MIT for grad school. Now that I am no longer tutoring at the MSSC, I am excited to continue my career as a tutor here at Superprof.

About the lesson

As a tutor, mainly in mathematics and Spanish, my tutoring strategies revolve around gaining hands-on experience solving problems and using what the student has learned in order to gain confidence, and, ultimately, to help unlock the student's belief in themselves. Tutoring is a passion for me, not simply because I have a deep understanding and appreciation for the subjects I teach, but because I get the chance to spread my love to other students. An important part about tutoring, especially in math, is to help build up the student’s confidence. Many people feel overwhelmed when they struggle with mathematics, and helping students gain the confidence not only to understand math, but to actually appreciate and love its power and beauty is the goal of all of my tutoring sessions. One of the most rewarding experiences tutoring in college was seeing students who I tutored as freshmen eventually go on to become my peers, tutoring alongside me at the Math and Science Skills Center, where I worked for three years as an undergrad providing free tutoring services to other students. Not only do I have years of experience not only tutoring at the college level, but also at the K-12 level, in subjects ranging from early arithmetic logic and reasoning to algebra and trigonometry, as well as Spanish, which I am fluent in. I believe that there is no one size fits all approach to 1-on-1 tutoring, so please reach out, I would love to meet you and discuss what your lesson plan could look like!

He has a high-level math background (studying at MIT!) but is still so great at finding ways to tackle the core curriculum at any level. Really friendly and was great, can’t recommend enough!
