About Alexandra
I am a graduate student at Columbia University and a professional journalist. I graduated undergrad Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude with degrees in International Relations and French & Francophone studies. More importantly, I love to write and I am passionate about teaching students to teach themselves.
For my students, I hope to be an inspiring and steadfast guide to navigating tests, classes, and college prep so they can put their best foot forward.
I tutor middle and high school English, history, humanities, and economics. I also do ACT/SAT test prep and comprehensive college application advising—including college essay development and editing, strategizing where to apply, and crafting a strong holistic application.
I also have previous experience tutoring French: I am fluent in French and attended a French university for a semester in college. I know what it's like to learn a language and I can teach you strategies to make you feel like you're making progress.

As a professional journalist, I have a sharp eye for editing essays, noticing patterns, and helping my students develop a love for learning.
Students can come to me with specific questions, areas for growth, or assignments on which they've been struggling. Together, we'll pinpoint what's tripping them up and develop a plan for problem-solving in the moment.
For SAT and ACT test prep, practice makes perfect. I tutor the entire exam—including both the math and humanities portions. The student will begin with a practice baseline exam, then we'll work throughout the session (or multiple) to define the types of questions each exam asks, patterns in multiple-choice responses, and how to strategize the best answer. We'll also work on shortcuts to cut down on time.
For students looking to hone their writing, I work with them to provide substantive edits and commentary on written assignments and college essays. We'll go over grammar, essay organization, voice, and substantive/content edits. My past students say a round of editing with me helps them improve future writing on their own! Ultimately, I believe every student's writing should sound like the student, all while communicating their vision clearly and concisely.
