About Xiaohe

Hi, I'm Haley, a native Mandarin speaker and postgraduate student at the University of Cambridge, where I am completing my master.

I have hands-on teaching experience across a wide range of ages and levels. Back in China, I taught English to young children, adult learners, and secondary school students preparing for China's high-stakes university entrance exams (Gaokao) and middle school exams (Zhongkao). This experience taught me how to adapt my teaching style to suit very different learners — from keeping young children engaged and motivated, to helping older students build exam confidence and analytical skills.

I bring the same patience, warmth and commitment to every lesson. I genuinely enjoy getting to know my students and finding the approach that works best for them. Learning a language is a personal journey, and I believe a relaxed, encouraging environment makes all the difference.

About the lesson

I offer personalised Mandarin Chinese lessons tailored to each student's goals, pace and learning style — whether you're a complete beginner, preparing for HSK exams, or looking to build confidence in everyday conversation.
Who the lessons are for:

My lessons are suitable for all ages and levels, including young learners, adult beginners, and intermediate students looking to improve fluency. I also offer Business Mandarin for professionals working with Chinese-speaking clients or companies.

Teaching approach:

I believe language learning works best when it feels natural and relevant. Rather than rote memorisation, I focus on building real communicative ability through conversation practice, contextual vocabulary, and structured feedback. For younger learners, I use engaging activities and visuals to keep lessons fun and effective. For adult learners, I adapt content to your specific interests or professional needs.

Lesson structure:

A typical lesson runs 60 minutes and usually includes a short review of previous material, new content introduction, and guided practice. I assign light homework where appropriate to reinforce progress between sessions. Lessons can be conducted online or in person.

My background:
I am a native Mandarin speaker currently completing my MPhil at the University of Cambridge. I have an undergraduate degree in English with a minor in Economics, graduating in the top 3% of my cohort. I have professional working experience both in China and UK, where I regularly communicated and produced content in both English and Chinese. I am patient, structured and genuinely enthusiastic about helping students make real progress.
