About Stephen
After 35 years in the private sector, I retired to the field of education. I have taught high school social studies in both private and public schools. I have found that American public schools have failed our youngsters because the expectations established by the public-school curriculum is very low. In fact, civics and economic material is no longer required in many government-run schools. It is my intention to bring these subjects to the attention of my students through classroom work that includes real-world application. I have the education and practical experience to be able to provide my students with an interesting pedagogy through lively Socratic involvement.

My expectations for my students are very high. I use a Socratic method that encourages questions and relies upon student research expertise. After over 35 years' experience in the private sector, real world examples and current events provide my students with the knowledge for practical application of my classroom material. I am a tough but fair teacher who establishes a high bar for my students to clear.
Typically, were we to learn about the US Constitution, the lesson would require the student to research a current situation that involves the application of a real-world political or economic policy. A perfect example would be the Executive Branch's effort to retire student debts without the consent of Congress. The student would be required to find a passage in the Constitution that allows the President to enact this policy. If there is no such Article, the student would need to find an alternative method to accomplish the goal within the confines of our Constitution. A knowledge of the history of the Constitution and its foundations is essential.
The audience for such lessons would involve high school students who are interested in continuing their educations at the college level. Civic education has not been a required subject in many public schools which has left many citizens without knowledge of the rights granted to them by the founders.
