About Jack

Hello! My name is Jack McKearney and I am a recent graduate of Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Medical Studies, which was centered on the core sciences with a focus in health policy and leadership. Since graduation in the Fall of 2021, I have been interning at East Lansing Family Dentistry and preparing to apply to Dental School. I have experience with students from a wide age range, but specifically middle school to undergraduate level students. In addition to the classroom setting, I have several years of experience with elementary and high school age kids coaching basketball. This involvement has helped me to connect with students and hone in techniques specific to each student. I like to focus on students truly understanding what they are learning, so that they know the why and how behind the answers they are reaching. As opposed to just memorizing information, which can be completely forgotten without frequent repetition. Although I tutor in a variety of topics, I am most fascinated with Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. I have gained an interest in science as I assisted on a research project at ASU focused on helping younger students to have authentic science experiences. I would like to share my enjoyment for science with younger students to help them develop a positive relationship with science. In my free time, I like to play golf and basketball, exercise, and go camping.

About the lesson

My approach with students is to get students to connect with and truly understand the information that they are learning. Knowing the why and how behind the answers they find enables students to solve unfamiliar and complex problems. It puts the information or technique in the mental "toolbox," so that they can access it to complete any relevant questions. This is opposed to simply memorizing information, which is easily forgotten and only applies to specific problems that a student has already completes. Moreover, this style of learning will prepare students to succeed in more difficult courses as they further their education. I am very patient with students and tailor my teaching style based on the learning style of the student. I have experience in educational research and have found that each student needs a different approach. Once the best style of learning for that student is determined, they are better able to grow and build confidence as a learner.
