About Curtis
Art has been the constant in my life for as long as I can remember. Born and raised in Urbana, IL, I am currently a Graduate Student at the University of Illinois (UIUC) pursuing a Master of Education in Art Education, with a 4.0 GPA. My academic journey is driven by the belief that art is a universal language that should be accessible to everyone.
My personal practice is rooted in hyperrealism, portraiture, and technical drawing. I find a profound connection to this style because I grew up around my mother's artworks, a former art teacher in Vietnam who specialized in this subject matter. I also love the complex identities and messages a portrait can convey—going far beyond a simple replication of a photograph to capture the essence of the subject.
As a first-generation immigrant and a survivor of a major car accident, my path has been defined by resilience. These experiences have deeply shaped my teaching philosophy: I view art as a powerful tool for self-expression, healing, and empowerment. I strive to create an inclusive space where students feel safe to move past the 'paralysis of perfectionism' and progress at their own pace.
In my lessons, we treat art as a journey of constant refinement rather than a destination of instant mastery. Whether you are aiming to refine your technical skills in charcoal and graphite, build anatomical accuracy, or develop your unique artistic voice, I am here to provide the structured guidance and encouragement you need to succeed. I look forward to helping you turn your unique perspective into impactful art that you love to create.

As a Master of Education candidate at UIUC with a 4.0 GPA, my teaching approach combines high-level technical skill with personalized mentorship. I specialize in hyperrealism and portraiture, helping students of all ages master foundational drawing, charcoal techniques, and accuracy.
A typical lesson begins with a focused demonstration followed by guided practice where I provide real-time, constructive feedback. I believe art is a universal language, and my goal is to build your confidence by breaking down complex subjects into manageable, technical steps. Whether you are a beginner looking to start your journey or an advanced student aiming for photographic realism, I adapt my curriculum to fit your specific goals and pace.
