About Jack
Hi there! My name is Jack Roach, a BA (Hons) graduate of 2020 and a current MA student of BIMM Birmingham, based in the Birmingham (Shirley/Solihull) area.
I've been playing guitar for 15+ years, with it being my primary instrument of choice. Since the start of my music career, I have delved into many different genres and styles.
As with most guitarists, I started with a rock/metal background, listening to and learning the complexities of the great "guitar gods" such as Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Van Halen, and more.
Over time, I researched a wider range of genres, specifically Blues, RnB, Soul, Hip-hop, and Jazz. From there I discovered new techniques to incorporate into band/solo work, but most importantly, teaching!
During my time on the BA degree, I studied further into music theory, different instruments such as the bass and drums, and specialized in looping as a solo career. All while studying the guitar further and in-depth.
Throughout these years, I privately tutored on the side, for a range of ages and levels. For 3 years, I taught a classroom on a Friday afternoon at a college, to where I gained a handful of private students from.
I have been privileged to be under the tutelage of some of the most experienced and inspiring lecturers throughout my time, all of who have had different approaches to teaching. From seeing the different methods of pedagogies and how they are applied in practice, I hope that I can bring these to my own lectures!

Every lesson is tailored to you as much as possible. If you learn more by reading, watching, or doing, then I shall aim to incorporate them into my lessons!
To achieve the best results per lesson, I aim for an hour of teaching. 45 minutes of dedicated, concentrated practice and progression. 15 minutes of warm-up, conversation, and reflection. Too long lessons can cause burnout and loss of interest, yet too little can be unproductive. Balance is Key!
I have 5+ years of experience in tutoring, both privately and in institutions. This includes individual lessons and class-sized lectures, both adapted to work with their own environment.
My level and age range for teaching are welcome to all, as long as you're willing to learn, I'm willing to teach!

Really helped me out! I’ve tried other tutors but Jack is the best by far. Very patient with me and adapted his way of teaching to help me understand due to me having learning difficulties. 10/10 recommending to all my friends!
I had Jack as a guitar tutor for a little over a year to hone my guitar techniques, up until lockdown hit. In that time Jack taught me scales, song writing, solo work, some important theory, and grade 6/7 songs.
I've had a few different guitar tutors over the past 10 years, Jack being the most recent one - and he is by far the best one in terms of his friendliness and teaching style. Learning scales was a daunting prospect to me, but he could explain it in a manner which made perfect sense in which other sources couldn't.
I recommend Jack for anyone of any skill level - beginner or expert - and no doubt if I decide to have tutoring again, I would take up his lessons. 10/10.Jack is a great teacher, knows all there is to know about guitar theory and his ability speaks for itself. Very friendly, takes time to listen to your thoughts and his teaching methods are simple but very effective. Definitely worth it!
Jack is a great teacher. As a complete beginner, I found Jack's profile and after a few lessons I already feel confident playing the guitar. He is very knowledgeable in practical learning techniques as well as the theory side of it too. I will continue learning with Jack and I encourage anyone else who wants to learn how to play to learn with him.
