About Mari

When teaching English to young learners, the magic lies in keeping lessons dynamic, visual, and highly interactive. Because young children learn language naturally through immersion and play, it is best to avoid teaching grammar rules in isolation and instead focus on meaningful context.
Here is a step-by-step breakdown of how to structure a winning English lesson for young learners:

1. The Warm-Up (5 Minutes)

• The Goal: Transition the kids into an "English-only" mindset and burn off excess energy.
• The Action: Use a high-energy routine like a hello song, a quick game of Simon Says, or a silly physical action (e.g., "Clap your hands 5 times!").

2. Presentation / Introduction (10 Minutes)

• The Goal: Introduce the day's core vocabulary or target language (lexis) clearly.
• The Action: Use Total Physical Response (TPR) and visual anchors.
• Hold up a flashcard or a real object (realia).
• Say the word clearly while acting it out (e.g., miming a cat scratching while saying "Cat").
• Have the students repeat the word with the action. Never just explain a word; always show and model it.

3. Controlled Practice (10 Minutes)

• The Goal: Build accuracy while keeping the students highly supported.
• The Action: Run structured, repetitive games where the language is predictable.
• "What's Missing?": Place three flashcards on the screen, tell them to close their eyes, hide one, and ask them to guess which one is gone.
• Chanting: Say the words in different voices (whispering, shouting, squeaking) and have them copy you.

4. Free Production (15 Minutes)

• The Goal: Build fluency by letting the kids use the language more independently.
• The Action: Transition into learner-centred, communicative activities.
• Use simple choice questions ("Do you want the blue ball or the red ball?") to get them speaking.
• Try a digital drawing game or a simple puzzle together where they have to call out the English words to help you finish the task.

5. Wrap-Up & Cool-Down (5 Minutes)

• The Goal: Calm the energy down and end on a positive note.
• The Action: Do a quick recap of the words learned, give specific positive praise ("High five for great speaking today!"), and sing a goodbye song.
