I use a student-centered, skill-based approach. Instead of just lecturing on grammar rules, I help you build foundational skills through a mix of techniques: Active Reading & Analysis: We'll go beyond just reading a text. I'll teach you how to annotate, ask critical questions, and identify literary devices, themes, and author's purpose. This helps you understand how a text works and why it's effective. Direct Application: For writing, we'll start with an outline, move to drafting, and then revise. I provide targeted feedback at each stage to help you refine your arguments and improve your sentence structure. Targeted Practice: I create exercises focused on specific areas you need help with, such as strengthening your thesis statement, improving paragraph transitions, or mastering punctuation. A Typical Lesson Plan A typical 60-minute session is flexible, but it generally follows this structure to ensure we make meaningful progress: Check-In (5 min): We'll start with a brief review of a past assignment or a general check-in on what you'd like to accomplish in the session. Skill Building (20 min): We'll focus on a specific skill, such as crafting a topic sentence or identifying symbolism in a poem. I'll explain the concept with clear examples. Collaborative Work (20 min): We'll apply the skill together. This could involve outlining an essay, revising a paragraph you've written, or analyzing a passage from a text. Independent Practice (10 min): I'll give you a short task to complete on your own, such as writing a new introduction for an essay or analyzing a short poem. We'll then review your work together to solidify your understanding.
