About Josh

I have tutored within Queen Mary, University of London, when I was studying within a PASS (Peer Assisted Study Support) scheme in my 2nd, 3rd years and as an MSc Postgraduate. I helped students get to a 2:1 grade or above in each case.

Before I am able to deliver the appropriate content and tailor my subject to a students needs, I spend a good 15 minutes trying to gauge the students requirements and what they aim to achieve from this tutoring.

What they are trying to achieve? - Whether answering exam questions, structuring essays or sourcing reputable resources and literature to answer essays/dissertations.

What they need to know? - Identifying key subject areas to be taught and note where there is overlap with others, providing and researching appropriate resources. This should therefore structure the lessons to ensure maximum understanding and excellent value for money on behalf of the student.

Identifying ways to improve their mode of retaining knowledge and increasing understanding long term. - In an open and comfortable introduction and throughout the tutorials, I aim to create an environment where questions are asked where there is little understanding or confusion to ensure my students can understand subject matter, to the point where they can apply this knowledge in the future to comprehend similar processes inherent in Geography, Environment and the Social Sciences.

I believe this process must be taken in a friendly, informal yet professional manner to ensure that myself and the student are engaged and comfortable with succeeding teaching and learning. Importantly, I want to make the student feel comfortable enough to be able to tell me to stop if they don't understand my explanations or need assistance in unravelling literature, texts and resources.

The nature of todays world, particularly with social media and the dynamic interactions across the virtual and physical world, requires a multi faceted approach to keep students interested and engaged with the subject matter. I use a range of resources such as youtube, peer reviewed scientific articles and journalism to show the range of materials available, demonstrate the range of difference in the interpretations across society and cultures and henceforth reputable and or less reputable resources to utilise in essays, dissertations and exams.

Geography is an exceptionally broad subject, alas within the context of an increasingly globalised world it is important to provide the breadth and depth of environmental, physical, socioeconomic, cultural and geopolitical processes to give students greater understanding of complex challenges and their implications across different global elements. I believe my practice is appropriate and relaxed enough to give students a great learning experience - where they gain great results academically that can be transferred to their lives and the wider world.

For exam questions and essays, I spend the introduction of lessons unravelling the questions and identifying the meaning of the questions. This dissection allows the student to understand what is being asked of them in order to submit successfully structured answered. I am able to be synoptic and highly in depth with answers and have a suite of resources at my disposal to do this. Compartmentalising questions allows us to structure the forthcoming lessons with appropriate subject matter to increase the students ability to critique resources and synthesise appropriate information to provide excellent yet succinct responses.

The process is similar for dissertations. Alas I can help with structuring and providing the key template to ensure a successful dissertation is submitted - starting broad and giving a breadth of an introduction and literature review, refining objectives and research questions of research, undertaking research and returning to breadth by demonstrating how the students novel research fits in the context of the wider realm of geographical enquiry.
