About Derrick
Clients can expect from me what they would expect from a seasoned teacher: punctuality, clear communication, honest feedback, and a genuine investment in each student's growth. I take seriously the trust that comes with working with someone's child, and I bring the same care and rigor to every session that I bring to my own classroom.

For nearly two decades I have taught in Los Angeles independent schools, and the conviction that has outlasted every classroom is this: students learn to think well not by being handed conclusions, but by being given the conditions, and the patience, to reach their own.
My lessons favor conversation over lecture and revision over performance. A typical session begins with where the student stands, whether an assignment, a draft, or a question that has stalled them. We then work closely on the material itself, identifying the one or two changes that matter most and attempting them together. Each session closes with a clear task to carry forward, so progress continues between meetings.
What sets me apart is a classroom teacher's perspective: I have designed curriculum, written assessments, and read thousands of student essays, so I know the difference between work that satisfies a rubric and work that genuinely thinks.
I work with elementary, middle, and high school students in English, humanities, essay writing, and logic and reasoning.
