About Mutsumi

I am a native Japanese teacher with over 30 years of teaching experience in the UK and Japan, specialising in secondary-school Japanese and exam preparation.

I have taught Japanese in a wide range of educational settings, including Hockerill Anglo-European College, The Japanese School in London, International House London and private tuition. My teaching experience covers GCSE, A-Level, IB Japanese and JLPT, from beginners to advanced and heritage Japanese learners.

I also have experience as a GCSE Japanese Speaking Examiner, which gives me a strong understanding of the speaking assessment and the skills students need to demonstrate in an examination setting.

My qualifications include a BA in Japanese Literature, a Japanese teaching qualification (430-hour programme), and Japanese teaching licences for junior and senior high school. I also hold an Enhanced DBS certificate.

Having taught both Japanese as a foreign language and Japanese to native and heritage speakers, I understand that every student comes with a different linguistic background. Some need to build Japanese from the foundations, while others already speak confidently but need support with kanji, reading and writing.

My aim is not simply to help students pass an examination, but to help them understand how Japanese works, become confident users of the language and achieve the best result they are capable of.

About the lesson

I specialise in GCSE and A-Level Japanese exam preparation, helping students develop the skills and confidence they need for Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

Lessons are tailored to each student. I first identify their current level, strengths and areas that need improvement, then create a structured study plan based on their individual goals and exam requirements.

I have over 30 years of experience teaching Japanese in the UK and Japan, including secondary school, international school and language school settings. My experience includes GCSE, A-Level, IB and JLPT preparation, as well as teaching Japanese to both native/heritage speakers and learners of Japanese as a foreign language.

For GCSE students, lessons can include:
• Speaking practice and exam-style questions
• Writing techniques and accuracy
• Reading and listening strategies
• Grammar, vocabulary, kanji and kana
• Exam technique and targeted revision
• Mock speaking and exam practice

I also work with heritage Japanese students who speak Japanese at home but need additional support with reading, writing, kanji or formal Japanese in preparation for GCSE or A-Level.

Lessons are usually 60 minutes and are available online throughout the UK. I aim to make lessons supportive, focused and practical, while adapting my teaching to the individual student rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
