About Gerson

There were people who trained me many years ago as I started my hospitality journey. Today, I am grateful to be in a position where I can give back by training new baristas as they are starting and progressing in their careers. I have been running this course since late 2020, and have trained students who many of them now are working in cafes and restaurants. In addition, since the beginning of 2022, I have had the opportunity to train hospitality students at Taupo Nui a Tia College in Taupo. In September 2022, 3 of the college students competed at Waikato Culinary Fare 2022, performing their coffee-making skills to the judges. Each of them was awarded medals, with one finishing as the Gold medalist. Apart from winning 4 medals in NZ Hospitality Championship in 2015, 2016, and 2018, I was a judge in barista competition at Waikato Culinary Fare in 2021, 2022, and 2024. I competed at NZ Cup Tasters 2022, finishing as top 20 in the country. You will see that I don't charge you an arm to attend the Fundamental Barista Course. My fee is way less than training sessions at coffee roasters. I find more joy in seeing people learning and developing new skills rather than taking as much revenue as possible. Fundamental Barista Course is fun yet intense training. You get to choose your music playlist, compete with your mates, drink all the coffee you make, and you still get full attention and assistance from the trainer. Photos are taken during the lesson, and you will see how much you progress by the end of the course.

About the lesson

Kick off your hospitality career and gain that confidence in making superb coffee consistently. Fundamental Barista Course offers you all you need to know to get behind the coffee machine and nail it as a pro, from understanding coffee origins, making all the common espresso beverages, to maintaining the equipment. Class is also available to those with some level of experience, seeking to upskill themselves and learn some latte art and pro techniques, or to those who are confident and like to challenge themselves and compete in Regional Culinary Fare and NZ Hospitality Championship. Class runs by appointment, crafted to suit your needs and goals, limited to 1 - 4 trainees. Evening class in Taupo town center between 5 pm - 8 pm. Training staff members at your site is available by request (transport fees may apply). Rates may vary. Business on-site training: hourly rates apply regardless of the number of trainees. Trainer is a Cafe Manager / Head Barista, who has been involved in the hospitality industry and coffee making for over 9 years, gaining 4 medals in NZ Hospitality Championship, top 20 Cup Tasters in 2022, and experienced in training new baristas. Three students from Taupo Nui a Tia College won medals in Barista Culinary Fare in Hamilton in 2022.
