About Shaun
During my employments, I have worked with
all different year groups, ranging from year 2 to year 6 and have taught all
areas of the curriculum in many different boroughs in London as well
as internationally. Working directly with many EAL as well as SEN
students has equipped me to alter my teaching styles to support and
understand the needs of different individuals.
Working as a class teacher involves planning for individual children
based on their personal needs, using resources effectively to ensure
every child has access to the curriculum, planning for
progression, differentiating, challenging all pupils, marking
effectively using next steps to develop learning, creating assessment opportunities for
all children, planning for and briefing teaching assistants,
delivering lessons, challenging pupils, recording and monitoring
assessments, working with all members of staff and other class teacher
duties.
After finishing my undergraduate degree, I decided to teach in an international context in China and the Sutanate of Oman. This was an amazing experience for me, I was able to apply
all my different teaching strategies and ideas in a completely new
environment as well as adapt my teaching to the needs of the
students. I enjoyed the challenges I faced working in China and in Oman, and
feel that it has only made me stronger as a teacher and increased my
knowledge and awareness of different learning styles of students from
other countries. Having returned back to the UK now to gain more experience in the UK curriculum, I hope to continue my passion in teaching in Primary Schools as this is what
I enjoy most.
Many children in my previous classes were SEN and EAL, therefore when
working in schools, I liaised with the SENCO and the EAL co-ordinator
on a regular basis and discussed as well as implemented different
strategies to support my class. I believe it is crucial to have a
positive attitude to behaviour management and to make expectations
clear by constant praise and rewards.
In lessons, using ICT effectively helps engage all children with
different needs and abilities and also makes lessons more enjoyable
and interactive. I therefore use every opportunity to use ICT in my
lessons. In my previous schools, we often planned as a team for many
different and exciting opportunities for the children to ensure that
they are stimulated and interested in what is being taught. We often
planned for cross curricular links between subjects. In my previous
schools, I have also planned around topics each term to make the
lessons more exciting. For instance, one term our topic was Egypt, we
therefore planned all lessons around this topic. The children found it
fascinating and were very excited to learn about it and therefore
engaged well. As well as planning regularly as a team, I have also
planned independently often, sharing my ideas with other class
teachers.
When teaching, I also use resources, interaction, practical work and
discussion, as I think this is very important to keep the children
engaged. This not only supports visual learners, but also EAL
children. I believe that continuous and accurate modelling is very
important and scaffolding for children guides them to become
independent learners, enabling them to understand what is required
from them giving them the confidence to work on their own.
I place a huge importance on providing learning experiences that build
upon the pupils prior knowledge. At the start of each topic, I ask
open-ended questions to help me assess what the students already know
and from this I plan where I should take them and which areas of
learning need extending. I always use my assessment to plan for
progression and ensure all learning objectives are met before moving
onto the next lesson. I believe having a clear success criteria is
crucial in order for students to understand how to achieve the
learning objective and enabling students to assess their own work
against the success criteria. Using mixed ability pairing and talk
partners supports all students as it helps develop their understanding
and share ideas ensuring all students are participating in the lesson,
I therefore use this every lesson when I teach.
I believe it is important for children to take responsibility for
their learning; therefore I ensure that children have all their
targets displayed in their books. We refer to our targets every lesson
and celebrate when children meet them. I make sure that children not
only understand their targets but also understand how they can reach
their targets. I regularly plan for children to self assess and peer
assess so that they can identify their own next steps. When marking
children’s work, I always give them a gap task to further develop
their learning by giving them a few minutes at the beginning of every
lesson to complete the task. I also track pupils regularly to ensure
that all children are making progress and are supported effectively by
having different focus groups each lesson.
I strongly encourage genuine parental involvement in the classroom and
with their children’s education as much as possible. I have high and
realistic expectations of every pupil, to enable them to reach their
full potential and behave in a suitable manner. I discuss children’s
progress and their child’s targets with the parents on a regular basis
enabling them to support their child accordingly at home.
The classroom environment plays an important role in educating
children, therefore this environment needs to be comforting and
suitable for the children. With a stimulating environment, children
will be further encouraged to learn. In my classrooms, I have produced
displays and working walls that were brightly coloured, good quality,
engaging and interactive. This provided an ideal opportunity for the
collaboration and celebration of the childrens work. In the
classroom, I had working walls for each subject which I referred back
to every lesson. These walls support children in their learning as it
encourages self-reflection and reflects their learning journey as we
progress through each unit. I made sure these walls were updated every
lesson in order to utilise it most effectively.
My teaching philosophy is based on the development of every child,
through building self-confidence and self-esteem. I believe that
children learn through first hand experiences and stimulating
environments, which make the learning personal and relevant to the
child.
I feel that as a teacher, I will always be learning from my
experiences as well as from the children. I am confident that my
different experiences of working in so many different boroughs and
areas will help me understand, value and include all children in my
lessons. I think it is important for every child to have access to the
curriculum and therefore aim to give every child an opportunity.
I hope to and look forward to bringing these skills to your school. I
feel determined to develop and broaden my experience further. I would
particularly welcome the challenge and the opportunity of becoming a
teacher at your school again bringing more new ideas, a positive
attitude, enthusiasm and humour to benefit the children, staff and
community beyond.
