I am a fully qualified and experienced English Language teacher with enthusiasm for my subject. I currently teach GCSE English Language in a further education setting. I am results driven and enjoy bringing students up to the next level so that they can improve their GCSE grade in the summer exams.

I have lots of experience of home tutoring but I had to take a break from this in 2020-2021 due to the Covid outbreak. I spent this academic year teaching 90% of my English Language lessons online and I'm now confident in delivering lessons in this way

I see a lot of students put off English as a subject because it is not a topic that they enjoyed at school. This saddens me and I work very hard to make my lessons relevant, engaging and fun. I believe that if a student is enjoying the tasks they are doing in our lessons then they will learn and retain information. Some students can feel overlooked in a big school class of 30+ students. I can offer 1:1 support and I go over things that the student might have not previously understood. I often find that they have been too shy to admit in class that they have not understood something and this shyness causes them to fall behind even further. In my first lesson with a student, we will sit down together and discuss the areas that are a worry to them, then we make a "priority list" of the things that we need to work on.

A lot of students have convinced themselves that they don't have an aptitude for English and they are almost too scared to attend their lessons. Again, I feel this happens as a result of bad experiences at school. I work very hard to rectify this by focusing on the areas that a student is good at, whilst working at fixing the areas in which they struggle. Believe me, even the most underconfident students have areas of English Language that they are good at, they just don't realise it. For instance, a student who struggles to write an imaginative writing piece is often gifted at writing a newspaper article or a speech. I work in a further education setting and English lessons are compulsory. I see so many students who are terrified at the prospect of coming to their lessons and a main focus of my job is to help these students become more confident in their own abilities. I find that this is the first- and sometimes the biggest- step in helping students to achieve their required grade.

I'm very calm and patient and if students don't understand something first time round then I endeavour to try to explain the task in a different way until they get it.
I make lessons fun and keep the topics interesting. The main purpose of all my lessons is to show students how to tackle the questions on the exam papers. This makes every lesson relevant to the end goal.

My lessons look at aspects of the exam such as:
Analysing language and structural features in a fiction text.
Analysing language and structural features in a non fiction text.
Writing an evaluation of a text.
Writing an imaginative story.
Transactional writing- this could be a speech, a newspaper article, a letter, a blog, a report.

All of these topics are relevant as these are the questions that make up the exam paper.

I work particularly well with struggling students and have tailored lessons to help them achieve that all important pass in their GCSE exams. I totally understand that a lot of students need to pass English Language at GCSE and never have a use for these skills again! For instance, I have taught students who needed a GCSE grade 4 to get on a nursing degree course or to enter a particular role in the armed forces. Whereas school English lessons tend to overload students with information, I give my students the tools they need to go in and get the necessary grade.

I have particularly good knowledge of the Edexcel paper. However, I can tailor my lessons to any exam board. I can set work around past papers from the exam board my student will be sitting the exam for.

Be warned though, there is a lot of work to put in so I will be setting short homework tasks! This is important because it shows that students can work independently and that they have understood all that we have been through in our sessions.

Any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.
