About Craig
Hello! I'm Craig, a dedicated and friendly English teacher with five years' experience, currently working in a Scottish secondary school. I have a genuine passion for English literature and language, and I find immense satisfaction in helping pupils develop their skills, build their confidence, and ultimately achieve the grades they deserve. My love for the subject goes beyond the classroom; I'm an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction and have a keen interest in how stories are told, whether in books, films, or the news. This passion allows me to bring texts to life for my pupils, making authors like Orwell and Golding feel relevant and exciting. I know that National 5 and Higher English can be challenging. My goal is to demystify the process, breaking down complex critical essays and RUAE passages into manageable, easy-to-understand steps. My approach is patient and encouraging, and I am committed to creating a supportive learning environment where pupils feel comfortable asking questions and developing their own critical voice. I hold a PGDE in Secondary English and a BA (Hons) in English, Journalism & Creative Writing from the University of Strathclyde, and I look forward to using my professional expertise to help you or your child succeed. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions!

As a fully qualified and experienced English teacher, my tutoring philosophy is built on creating a supportive, confident, and results-focused learning environment. I understand that every pupil has a unique set of strengths and areas for development, and my primary goal is to tailor each lesson to meet their specific needs. My Teaching Methodology and Techniques: My approach is pupil-centred. In our first session, I focus on getting to know the pupil and conducting a diagnostic assessment to identify exactly where they need support. From there, I build a personalised learning plan designed to close knowledge gaps and build confidence week by week. My teaching techniques are grounded in the specific requirements of the SQA curriculum: • RUAE (Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation): I teach pupils a reliable, formulaic approach to deconstruct complex non-fiction texts. We practise identifying key arguments, analysing language features such as sentence structure and word choice, and mastering the 'in your own words' questions to secure maximum marks. • Critical Essay Writing: Many pupils struggle with essay structure. I break down the critical essay formula into manageable steps, from crafting a strong introduction to building analytical paragraphs with clear evidence and insightful commentary. We work on developing sophisticated arguments related to key themes, characterisation, and style. • Scottish Set Texts & Portfolio Support: I provide expert guidance on the specific Scottish Set Texts for National 5 and Higher, as well as offering structured support for the portfolio writing process, from initial brainstorming to final redrafting. Who My Lessons Are For: My lessons are specifically designed for secondary school pupils in Scotland studying towards their SQA qualifications. I specialise in: • National 5 English • Higher English Whether you are aiming to move from a C to a B, secure an A-pass, or simply build your confidence in the subject, I can provide the dedicated, one-to-one support you need to achieve your goals. My Experience and Qualifications: I am a fully qualified secondary school teacher with five years of experience, currently teaching within the Scottish state school system. My qualifications include: • PGDE in Secondary Education (English) from the University of Strathclyde. • BA (Hons) in English, Journalism & Creative Writing. This means I not only have an expert command of my subject but also a professional, pedagogical understanding of how to teach it effectively according to the standards of the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Typical Lesson Structure: A typical lesson lasts for 60 minutes, which allows us enough time to review previous work, tackle a new concept in depth, and set clear targets for the week ahead.
