About Mary
I have over five years of experience tutoring GCSE maths and physics both one-on-one and in groups especially with students who find them difficult subjects and have low self-confidence with these topics. My students have all attained their target grades in exams and been satisfied with the results of their tutoring. I've also found that they tend to improve in confidence with gentle guidance and encouragement which is very rewarding.
I also have experience tutoring primary-level maths, science, and English. My educational background includes an MSci degree in theoretical physics, and I am currently working on my Ph. D.

I hold a degree in theoretical physics from UCL and I am currently a Ph. D. student in applied mathematics at Imperial College London. My research is in geophysical fluid dynamics, specifically the behaviour of oceanic vortices; I study the behaviour of vortices generated by computational application of a simplified form of the Navier-Stokes equations known as the quasi-geostrophic equations.
I have experience tutoring one-on-one and in groups for students at KS3, GCSE, and A-level. My preferred style is to let the student guide by telling me what they struggle with so that we can tackle problems together and try to unpick challenging concepts and build confidence. My belief is that anyone can "do maths", but everyone has a different way of looking at and thinking about it, and sometimes things simply need to be explained in a few different ways and practised before they can be understood. I can help students to prepare for exams by working through practice problems and exams together, by going over syllabus materials, and, hopefully, by helping to make things more interesting.
I am a friendly and approachable person who likes to work with people. I enjoy challenges, and I love tutoring partly because it reminds me of things about maths I find interesting and challenging. I'm looking forward to working with people soon!
