About Alicia

Hi, my name is Alicia and I have always been passionate about learning new languages. I grew up in Tokyo and have lived in the U.K. for 10 years. After studying French and Spanish at UCL, I pursued a master's degree in Media, Communication and Development at LSE. I'd love to help you with anything, whether it be just wanting to start learning how to write/speak in Japanese or struggling with accents! Languages: Japanese, English, French, Spanish

About the lesson

I have always been told by my students that they never get intimidated or scared of making mistakes when I am tutoring. Mistakes are what make us learn languages so much quicker! Everyone has their own method when it comes to language learning. I'd be flexible to your needs, focus and what you enjoy!

Perfect! Alicia has a dynamic, charming informative style and is a natural skilled linguist and teacher. She has completely resurrected my love of Japanese (which is rusty to say the least) and plans engaging lessons while being very open to follow me down multiple linguistic rabbit holes. It really helps that she herself is Japanese & that her English is like that of a native speaker and on top of that - she’s learned other languages at university. Book with confidence. Enjoy getting to know
this exciting language with a truly brilliant teacher and lovely person. Arigatoo gozaimasu, Arisia Sensei!

Catherine's son is a joy to teach. He asks me many questions both during and outside the class, which helps me immensely with understanding how he is getting on with the material presented. I am very excited to see how rapidly he will learn the language with my assistance. Thank you!

Perfect! If you are looking for an excellent tutor - look no further!

Patient, friendly and all around brilliant, I highly recommend Alicia as a language teacher!

Her grasp of the language is of course exceptional (as you would expect!) but her teaching style is also fantastic, attentive and enthusiastic, and her experience with several languages truly sets Alicia apart.

I am a student with specific needs, which she met without any issues, and I have learned a lot in a very short space of time. Thank you!!

Nicole, who works as a nanny for a family in London, approached me about 2 weeks ago and requested me to tutor for the daughter to cultivate her interest in Japanese even further. I have offered an intensive introductory course for a week, which consisted of four 45min lessons covering different aspects of the Japanese language and culture. It was a wonderful week teaching her! She is friendly and very engaging. Her pronunciation is impressive. I cannot wait to teach her Japanese more in depth. Thank you both :)

Perfect! Alicia is a great teacher. She takes the time to carefully construct lessons and a strategy that befits the student (me!).

Only a handful of lessons in, I'm already more excited and engaged with learning Japanese than I have been in the past 2 years of Duolingo, one-off classes, and workbooks.

I immediately knew I would get on well with Sam. He is a friendly, enthusiastic and open-minded individual who had exhibited a positive outlook and attitude from the very start in the first session. He tackles in-class tasks as well as assigned homework diligently and asks relevant questions if anything remains unclear. He is a self-motivated student who practises Japanese outside class too. I cannot wait to see how rapidly his Japanese improves. Thank you, Sam!

Perfect! I had put off finding a Japanese tutor for over a year because I was worried I wouldn’t find someone who’s just as excited about languages as I am, a Japanese native and truly listens to what your needs are rather than deciding ‘they know best’ (amongst other things). Alicia is all of those things and more. I’m at a more advanced level where you already know a lot of the grammar and you’re really trying to fix the little things. I think I had an incredible teacher at school, but Alicia has gone on to show and explain so many things to me in the 2 lessons that we’ve had that I had not once heard in my formal studies - so much makes sense now!! If I’ve managed to grasp so much in 2.5hrs worth of Japanese, then I can’t fully comprehend just how quickly my level of Japanese will sky rocket...
I think if you’ve studied languages for a while you know that most native tutors don’t actually know much about their language linguistically speaking - well, Alicia certainly does! Not just on a basic level, but the really nitty gritty stuff too (which is perfect if you’re a bit of a grammar nerd like me ). She’s clearly a natural at teaching too (coming from a fellow tutor) and really takes time to answer questions, research what she doesn’t know and explains concepts in such a smooth way that doesn’t make you feel like you’re in a boring lecture. Such an easy going & fun personality to be around...I really do feel like I’ve landed on a gold mine here. I couldn’t recommend her more. I truly believe that whatever your needs are she’ll manage with flying colours! Thank you for all your help Alicia x

Mihaela is such an enthusiastic student, and it has been my honour to teach her. The level of her Japanese is already very high, especially her understanding of the grammar is impressive. I want to take this to an even higher level now and ensure she gets all the little nuances right. Her pronunciation is good too, and with more speaking practice, she will be having a conversation with me entirely Japanese! I am very excited to assist her in this linguistic journey.

Perfect! Alicia is a very kind, patient and diligent teacher. I love her individual approach to students. Before our first lesson she asked me about my goals and what have made me want to learn Japanese.
She makes sure I understand all information and gives a homework based on what You need to practice more.
What I love the most is that she lays emphasis on foundations (writing system, pronunciation, etc.) and she teaches the language from both, cultural and linguistic perspectives.
I am very excited after my first lesson and can't wait to learn more Japanese with her in future.

Perfect! Classes with Alicia are really informative! I had been doing my own study for a while, but for sure nothing that can compare to how it is taught by someone who really knows. I have so much new knowledge, plus I have been given things to work on. Everything that you're struggling with, she takes her time to evaluate what you need to improve and how to do it and reach your ultimate goals (which she bases her lessons on), an then assigns you exercises to work on it. One of the best decisions I have done to keep learning and get better at my Japanese :)

I have come to know Alicia through our time as undergraduate languages student at UCL. This is where I learnt that no matter what she does, she always brings three essential contributions to her work: insight, determination, and enthusiasm. She is truly committed to exploring various languages and cultures, and teaching Japanese is definitely a true passion of hers. Alicia exudes goodwill and organisation when it comes to explain the bases and intricacies of the Japanese language and she has been patient enough with me only as a friend to present the basics of the Hiragana and Katakana writing systems for example. I would thoroughly recommend her as a tutor as she is well-versed in grammar, pronunciation and translation and her positive attitude will certainly rub off on you!
