About Christopher

From 2015-2016, I was Wigan's ambassador in its French twin Town, Angers. During this time I spent time in schools teaching English and doing activities with children, teenagers and adults as well as translating and interpreting for Angers' town hall and during official delegation visits.

I have taught over 200 private lessons and during 3 months of studying the PGCE I taught up to 6 lessons per week.

All of my students have achieved their target grades where this was applicable, and in some cases students have exceeded their target grades. I am proud to state that one of my students achieved the new top grade 9 for her GCSE sat this year. Parents of students have also informed me that their children's confidence in themselves has improved thanks to my tutoring.

What I believe makes me a great teacher is personality and experiences. I have learned languages through the public school system and through spending time in France and Germany. Language learning research tells us that we must make create an environment in which learners are at ease, and my personality and social skills enables me to do this. I also have excellent subject knowledge, having studied French to degree level and obtained 81,5/100 in the DALF C1 level fluency exam. Finally, my passion for the French language fuels me to practise regularly through listening and reading French and speaking and writing at French conversation groups.

About the lesson

Naturally a meticulous person, I like my students to master the basics before moving on as I believe this creates a solid foundation which provides for creativity later on when students are more confident.

I teach in French where possible but I recognise that some students find this threatening. During my lessons, I get a feel for the level and confidence of the student and adapt as the lessons progress. I personally believe that languages are learned through constant repetition and drilling as well as by explaining grammar in as simple terms as possible referring back to English concepts where possible.

A typical lesson (depending on the student's level) begins with an informal chat in French and will then proceed to a starter activity consolidating what was learned in the previous lesson. The main part of the lesson is dedicated to activities which practise vocabulary or grammar concepts, and the final part of the lesson consists of a plenary activity or discussion summarising what has been learned during the lesson.

I am, however, flexible in my approach as I believe that we all learn in different ways. When I have taught primary school children in the past, I have found the use of games and activities to be particularly effective, and this is also the case for some teenagers and adults. The joy of private tuition is that students and tutors can agree the style at the first lesson, and change this later if it is not working. I am definitely prepared to deliver a more formal and rigorous style of teaching for adults if required.

- One-to-one tuition at the student's premises: £30 p/h. Travel costs: £5 for every complete half hour travelled. For example a 45 minute round trip for a one hour lesson would cost £35.

- Group tuition: Base rate + 50% reduction for each additional student.
