About Bertie

I'm a professional pianist who has just finished four years of playing at the world famous Bettys Tearooms in North Yorkshire. After starting piano at the age of four, I studied at YYM at Leeds College of Music from nine years old, achieving my Grade 8 in classical piano, as well as all ABRSM jazz piano grades. In 2016 I left YYM to join York's elite YMF Jazz Orchestra as principal pianist, performing with the group at London's Royal Albert Hall in both 2018 and 2022.
I've been teaching piano for over five years in York and Newcastle, tutoring students from age 4 to 64.

My favourite thing about teaching is uncovering my pupils' musical passions, be it Mozart or Motown, Scarlatti or Swift. I believe a music teacher's most important job is to inspire their pupil to play what they love, and I make sure to tailor every lesson to the pupils' preferences. I am qualified and experienced in teaching for classical piano exams up to Grade 6, but I am equally comfortable teaching pop music (how to read chord symbols, how to vamp, how to improvise), jazz piano and songwriting. It's up to you!

Perfect! Bertie has great passion and energy for teaching piano! I’m an adult learning intermediate jazz and he’s proven to be a great teacher! Would certainly recommend.
