About Stephen

As a professional high school teacher, I had roughly 180 students a year for 5 years. I was able to maintain high snapshot scores. These are district benchmarks that are provided to all schools to gain insight into how teachers are doing compared to each other. My students were able to perform in the top 3 rather consistently all years I taught physics. I attribute this very highly to my expectations as a teacher and a reflection of the value in actually caring about your students as individuals and young adults.

I received teacher of the year 2014-2015. I also helped pass on my skills and techniques to fellow physics teachers through a professional development course taught at Rice University.

About the lesson

Physics is such a fun subject to study! Often times many students feel scared because of the math involved. Using my approach to problem-solving has generally been able to improve the scores of students of all levels. As a teacher, I do my best to relate to my students so I like to get to know and understand your interests. This helps me in making connections and analogies that help take abstract ideas and make them more concrete and understandable.

I don't believe that we need to remember word for word definitions, instead, we should be able to demonstrate our proficiency by actually applying lessons to real-world problems. My classroom always has an activity in which we apply the skills we learned and practice them for real! Experiments are my favorite thing about science and I believe that as scientists and students, we learn best through actually "doing science" and talking about what we learned and noticed!

Through conversation and discussions, students are able to analyze and self-evaluate their conclusions drawn based on the collected data and synthesis of meaning. I encourage risk-taking and never ever let a student feel like a failure. Our failures are often where we find our successes. I will never give up on a student. I will just constantly think of a new way to try and get an idea through to making sense for you!

If my rate is too high, please just reach out to me and we can discuss a plan. I am a very flexible individual that worries more about the success of the individual more than the pay I receive.
