About Michael
I have a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Nottingham and am a former maths teacher. I have had a passion for maths and maths education since I was at school, and teaching maths has always been something I have found genuinely rewarding. I have been teaching and tutoring for 15 years and I enjoy it so much that it is almost a hobby for me!
I now tutor part-time with a small number of students, which means I have the time to focus fully on each student and their progress. I particularly enjoy getting to know how each student thinks, identifying where they are struggling and seeing their understanding and confidence develop over time.
I also welcome students contacting me during the week if they get stuck on a question or need help with something between lessons. I want tutoring to be an ongoing source of support rather than something that only happens during the lesson itself.
My aim is for students not only to improve their grades, but to become more confident and independent mathematicians.

I believe the best maths lessons are those where the student does most of the thinking and problem-solving, with the tutor there to guide, explain and build confidence. Rather than simply showing students how to solve a problem, I aim to help them understand why a method works and give them the confidence to tackle similar problems independently.
My lessons are personalised to each individual student, focusing on their needs, strengths and areas for improvement. I adapt the pace and content of lessons depending on the student, whether that means working through a difficult topic, strengthening the basics, tackling challenging exam questions or preparing for a particular exam.
Lessons are usually one hour per week, but I am flexible. Some students may benefit from more frequent lessons at certain times of the year, particularly in the run-up to exams, while at other times a less frequent arrangement may be more appropriate. I am happy to adapt the schedule to suit the student.
I tutor students across all school levels, from pre-GCSE up to A Level Further Maths. I think it is important that a student feels comfortable with their tutor and that their personality and teaching style are a good fit. For that reason, I offer a free trial first lesson with no obligation to continue. It gives us a chance to meet, discuss what the student would like to achieve and see whether my approach works for them.
