About Jesse
Based in Burlington, North Carolina, Jesse brings a unique perspective shaped by years of touring with acclaimed bands Phosphorescent and Castanets, formal composition training at UNC-Chapel Hill (B.A. Music, 2023, Phi Beta Kappa), and an ongoing fascination with ancient civilizations. His compositional voice emerged from a rich intersection of influences: the polyrhythmic sophistication of early 20th century music of the Americas, the spiritual intensity of early Italian opera, and the timeless resonance of the world's oldest poetic and musical traditions, from the Southern Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh Hurrian Hymns of ancient Syria. Historical depth combined with contemporary techniques drawn from artists like Johnny Greenwood and Bernard Herrmann, creates compositions that feel both primal and futuristic. Thorp’s academic compositions have been read and recorded by groups including the earspace ensemble and UNC Percussion, with works like "Nuage Interstellaire" - a meditation on the Oort Cloud - recorded and presented by Morehead Planetarium. His recent theater work includes composing the original score for "The Pillowman" at University of North Carolina School of the Arts (2025), working with director Robby Lutfy. As a performer, Thorp has graced stages at major festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Primavera Sound, and the Late Show with David Letterman. His current ensemble Warka explores "apocalyptic rhythm and blues" [Indyweek] drawing on narrative traditions of Ancient Near Eastern literature and contemporary pop music. Jesse approaches his work with clarity, vulnerability, and what collaborators describe as an infectious enthusiasm. Empathy and gentleness infuse his compositions with a profound humanity that resonates with both performers and audiences. The Earspace Ensemble noted that his music is "a lot of fun to perform"—a reflection of his collaborative spirit and deep respect for the performers who bring his work to life.

I believe that serious guitar study should open doors, not close them. Too often, guitarists learn songs and techniques in isolation, never understanding how a blues progression relates to a jazz standard, or how a tango rhythm connects to Middle Eastern folk music. My approach centers on revealing these connections through comprehensive music theory tailored specifically to the guitar. Whether you're interested in Bill Frisell's atmospheric jazz, Marc Ribot's experimental rock, or the passionate tango of Astor Piazzolla, understanding the theoretical foundations allows you to move fluently between styles and express your own musical voice with confidence and intention.
