About Allison

I spent six and a half years at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill pursuing a Ph.D. in History. While I focused on the European Middle Ages, I had the opportunity to teach American history, Roman history, European history survey courses, and a First Year Studies seminar for those new to university life. While I recognize that the content (people, places, and dates) of these classes was important for understanding the past, I also see these classes as opportunities to develop one's reading, writing, and critical thinking skills as well as ability to work with primary and secondary sources. I believe in the value of transferable skills and strive to assist students in succeeding in whatever path they end up choosing, whether it be the humanities or STEMs.

Because of my passion for teaching, I decided to transition from higher education to secondary education. I believed that this career change will allow me to focus on what I love most--working with students. In January of 2022, I began the Ed.S. program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where I specialize in Special Education. My goal is to be an advocate for students and promote equitable education for every individual regardless of background or ability. I find the most meaning in teaching students skills that they will utilize throughout their lives and look forward to working with you to reach your full potential.

Throughout my career, I have primarily taught writing-intensive courses to students new to the collegiate environment. I recognize that students come from an array of backgrounds and levels of experience with reading and writing. I have extensive experience assisting students in developing their oral and written communication skills so that they can meet and exceed their academic goals.

My goal is to be an advocate for students and promote equitable education for every individual regardless of ability. I recognize that students come from an array of backgrounds and levels of experience with reading and writing. I have extensive experience assisting students in developing their oral and written communication skills so that they can meet and exceed their academic goals.

I believe in meeting students where they are. Lessons will always begin by establishing a baseline of the students' skills using previous writing samples or other assessments. This will allow me to design lessons that respond to your needs so we can grow together as readers and writers. In my experience, students struggle to articulate their ideas not because they lack insights but because they lack a command of English grammar and rhetorical skills. Be prepared to learn about sentence structure and the ways that it can substantially improve your ability to communicate effectively. While examining grammar rules can be tedious, mastery of these tools will expand students' ability to share their thought-provoking ideas.

I am comfortable teaching students grades 9-12 as well as undergraduate and graduate students. Writing, however, is a quintessential skill that develops over one's lifetime, so I am happy to work with learners of all ages.
