About Laura
I am a chemist who obtained my Master's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2010. While pursuing my degree, I realized that my favorite part of the week was when I got to act as a supplemental instructor for the undergraduate classes. This, coupled with my reflection of my time spent as a teaching assistant and tutor as an undergraduate, led me to realize my true passion was using my communication skills to teach chemistry to others.
I know that chemistry is traditionally a difficult subject for many students and I often share a secret with my students - it didn't come easy to me at first either. Students don't wake up one day and instantly know how to problem solve. It is a process. Because I had to work at it, I developed many ways to explain the material to others in the same position.
For the past 16 years, I taught General Chemistry and other chemistry courses at the collegiate level. During that time, I have had the opportunity to work with students of all ability levels and all learning styles.
Realizing that teaching is my passion, I took an opportunity in 2022 to earn a teaching certificate in higher education from the Harvard Bok School of Learning. This has helped me to increase my efficacy in the classroom and I've been able to apply many of those ideas to tutoring.
In addition to my work in higher education, I have been working in private tutoring for the last 20 years, having accrued more over one thousand hours of private tutoring. I love tutoring because it is all of my favorite parts of teaching - I get to help students to learn and hopefully develop a passion for the subject matter. My favorite time with students is when I see the smile when something they have been struggling with finally makes sense.
My goal is to provide a collaborative, stress-free space where no question is a bad question. We will tackle the tricky concepts at your own pace until the logic clicks and the anxiety fades away. I look forward to partnering with you, celebrating those "aha!" moments, and helping you build the lasting confidence you need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Hello! My name is Laura and I am a chemist! I spent 16 years in higher education teaching various chemistry courses. I’ve also spent much of the last 20 years doing private tutoring. I love to tutor because I get to build relationships with individual students and work to help you achieve your goals. When I work with you as a student, you can expect me to provide you with materials and tools to help you succeed in a course as an individual! I also am extremely into active learning and metacognition in my sessions. I ask you to explain your thought processes so that I can help you find any misconceptions you have, and I ask you to re-explain things we have gone over so you can realize that you understand what you know.
I have taught General Chemistry, as well as other chemistry courses at the collegiate level for 16 years.
I spent much of my time teaching investigating how people learn. I am a huge proponent of active learning - asking a student to explain how s/he is working through a problem so that I can understand how a student understands.
In an effort to improve as an educator, I obtained a teaching certificate in higher education from the Harvard Bok School of Learning. It helped me to reflect and learn how to best help students, which also helps me immensely in my one-on-one tutoring sessions.
I am qualified to work with students in chemistry (general high school, honors high school, AP high school, college chemistry for health sciences, and general chemistry I and II). I am also able to work with students in elementary math, as well as algebra.

I’ve known Laura for years, and in that time she’s been both a chemistry professor and tutor. Her patient guidance, clear explanations, bubbly personality, and flexibility help students gain confidence and succeed in chemistry. Whether you need ongoing course support or targeted test prep, Laura’s tutoring truly makes a difference.
Laura helped my daughter throughout the entire school year. Her support, guidance, and teaching approach made complex chemistry concepts easy for my daughter to understand. As a result, my daughter aced every test and got an A in her class.
My daughter's schedule is very hectic with sports and other obligations. Laura's flexibility was extremely helpful and greatly appreciated. I would recommend her to anyone looking for tutoring assistance!View more recommendations
