About Ruth

I have been teaching for twenty years and entered students for all ABRSM grades. My grade results have varied from good passes to Distinctions.I currently teach 35 students privately and I work in two primary schools teaching flute and piano. I have also had local music festival cup winners.

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching privately for nineteen years and worked in two local Primary schools for six years.
I also run an adult flute choir.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an up to date DBS carried out in September 2014.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the British Flute Society

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have a wide range of students starting with a six year old beginner piano student to an adult flautist playing Diploma level pieces. Some of my students love the challenge of exams whist others prefer developing through a wide variety of music. I am currently teaching music from Adele, Robbie Williams, Grade 1 flute, Grade VII flute, Faure, Mozart, Telemann ......!

I have been teaching privately for nineteen years and worked in two local Primary schools for six years.

I have an up to date DBS carried out in September 2014.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

About the lesson

I studied Music at university and have a PGCE in Primary education. I love teaching the flute from beginner to Grade 8 plus and have students varying in ages ,right up to retired learners. I also love teaching the piano which I teach up to and including Grade 6! My students all enjoy playing a wide range of styles of music, learning good techniques along the way. I am very happy to enter students for both ABRSM and Trinity board exams but also develop the musicianship of those who prefer not to take Grades. I work to make the lessons a great balance of learning techniques and engagement in the music. I use a great range of ideas and materials, with clear goals, to bring the very best out of my pupils. I treat each pupil as individual and work to their particular needs. Above all I wish for my students to love playing!

I provide a musical environment with a mixture of expectations, patience and fun. I have been described as supportive, flexible and encouraging in my teaching style yet setting appropriate challenges for students too.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach flute, piano and music theory.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a music degree BA(Hons) in which I opted for performance and a PGCE specializing in Music.

- How much do you charge?

I currently charge £13 for half an hour and £25 for an hour.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from home.

- When are you available?

I teach Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday during the day and afternoon/ evenings. Most students break during half terms and holidays but I am happy to teach during the Summer if requested.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

For the flute I teach from beginner to advanced.
Piano from beginner up to and including Grade VI.
Music Theory up to Grade V.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

It is optional as to whether students take exams and I can prepare them for ABRSM or Trinity Board.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I have had the pleasure of teaching some of my students for eight or more years and I find it a great joy to see them develop and progress both as musicians and people.
