About Anthony
I've been a working flamenco guitarist since January of 2006. I have also worked as a research assistant in neuroscience laboratories, but wanted to dedicate myself to being a musician. I also play some classical pieces, mostly for weddings. I have taught for short periods when I had people interested.
I'm familiar with playing for flamenco dance, flamenco singing, and as soloist.
I'm also familiar with many of the teaching methods and books out there, so I can teach you with what I have (which is considerable) and also with whatever you may already have.
Over my nearly 40 years of playing guitar, I have learned pretty much all the fundamentals of harmony, scales, and chords. I have also learned a great deal about rhythm and dynamics, which are often overlooked and need to be studied carefully on their own.
I do have a well trained attention that I can use to hep you discover problem areas and I can guide you on learning to solve the problems as they arise.
Each of us has a unique shape to our arms, wrists, hands, fingers (and fingernails), and this results in a playing position somewhat unique to you. It takes time to learn what works for each individual, there is not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Years ago, I studied with some guitarists in San Diego, who were mainly students of Pepe and Romero. I also studied a bit with flamenco guitarists in Spain, San Diego and Orange County/Los Angeles.

Each student is unique in terms of what they know when they begin lessons and each student gravitates toward different aspects of music. So, a teacher really needs to learn what the student wants to be able to play and help the student with their unique goals. However, it is wise to use some technique studies in conjunction with actual pieces of music (as in the world of classical guitar), or in the context of flamenco song forms (as in the world of flamenco).
I like to use GuitarPro ($69.95) for the simplicity of how it lays out music and for the ease of communication. While it is visually very, very helpful, it also allows you to control the tempo and to hear how whatever you are learning should sound. So, I will ask that each student purchase the software and install it on their computer. I will send technique studies and etudes that are appropriate for your particular level and then I can send complete pieces when appropriate.
You don't have to read music, but it can be very, very helpful if you do or if you are willing to learn. I also do use TAB in conjunction with standard notation. I strongly believe that seeing both is the most helpful, which is why GuitarPro is such a great tool for learning the guitar.
Usually, students need some technique studies to learn how to place their fingers so as to allow the music to flow, and their sense of rhythm to become established. But, we can also work simultaneously on some music that is playable with your current ability. You may have to wait a while to play your favorite music if it's too far outside your level, but I can sometimes teach you a section of it or simplify some of it so that it is playable for you.
I would like to add that flamenco and classical are very, very different animals even though they are played on essentially the same instrument and share some techniques.
Classical, on the one hand, tends to emphasize harmony and melody, placing rhythm somewhat in the background. Also, teaching classical music on the guitar allows teacher and student to make use of a treasure trove of technique studies and etudes that provide excellent material for learning.
Flamenco, on the other hand, tends to emphasize rhythm, and places harmony and melody somewhat behind rhythm. Although, this is not necessarily always the case, it is a strong tendency and is revealed through studying the flamenco song forms and how they are played with dancers, singers, and other musicians. Teaching flamenco guitar provides a wealth of opportunities to work on specific techniques and internalizing rhythm in all its variety, which daunting, but vey rewarding as you see yourself learning.
I like to break things down into the simplest of units, and then build with what has been learned. All of this requires considerable work with your shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and fingers. It also means developing control and motor memory to perform these styles of music which touch upon far more than those new to studying music ever would imagine.
