About Harper

I trained in flamenco guitar in Spain for years before building a teaching career around that authentic tradition, and across fifteen years of teaching I have guided approximately three hundred eighty students. My background gives me genuine, lived insight into flamenco's rhythmic complexity and cultural depth, insight that purely academic guitar teachers simply cannot offer their students. I work particularly well with students genuinely drawn to Spanish and flamenco culture, not just guitar technique in isolation from its rich cultural roots. My teaching style is rigorous and rhythm-focused, reflecting authentic flamenco tradition, though I remain genuinely warm and patient with students working hard to master genuinely demanding technique. I have guided numerous students toward real competency in authentic flamenco style, watching many develop genuine passion for the tradition alongside real technical skill. Students consistently tell me they appreciate learning something authentic and culturally rich, rather than a diluted, generic version of guitar technique. I take genuine pride in helping students connect with flamenco's genuine emotional depth, not just its technical demands alone. My approach treats guitar as inseparable from the culture and tradition it comes from, and I think that distinction matters enormously. After fifteen years, I remain genuinely passionate about sharing authentic flamenco tradition through teaching.

I trained in flamenco guitar in Spain for years, and that tradition shapes an entirely rhythm-first approach to teaching guitar, since flamenco lives and dies on precise, powerful rhythmic control. Every lesson begins with rhythm work, clapping compás patterns before ever touching the guitar, since I've found rhythm must genuinely live in the body before it can live in the hands. Technique is built slowly and correctly from the start, right hand position especially, since flamenco technique demands precision that sloppy early habits make genuinely difficult to fix later. I teach through real flamenco pieces from early on, not simplified exercises alone, since I've found authentic material motivates far more than disconnected technical drills ever manage to achieve. Improvisation gets introduced once fundamentals are genuinely secure, since flamenco depends heavily on personal expression within a structured rhythmic framework rather than purely memorized, fixed pieces. I explain the cultural and historical context behind flamenco constantly, since understanding where this music comes from genuinely deepens a student's connection to what they're actually playing. Listening to real flamenco recordings forms a core part of every lesson, training the ear to recognize authentic rhythm and phrasing rather than relying purely on written notation. I correct precisely and immediately, since flamenco technique compounds quickly, and small errors left uncorrected become genuinely difficult habits to break later. Every lesson stays rhythmically rigorous and deeply rooted in authentic tradition.
