About Vincent

Hello everyone, my name is Vincent Lin and I'm a first year mathematics student in Trinity College Dublin. For me, logical reasoning, problem solving and effective communication have always been the most important skills to develop as a student, which is why my core interests lie in subjects like Maths and Physics, and activities like Debating.

For maths, I have captained my school’s Maths and Applied Maths team to the National Finals, undergone Olympiad level training, and independently studied the A-Levels Mathematics course.
In debating, I was a part of Ireland’s National Debate Team, which competed internationally in Vietnam last summer, and I also won Oxford Schools Debating Championship 2023, the largest international BP debating competition in the world for schools.

Given this, as well as my recent experience of doing LC subjects/projects, I naturally wanted to help others on their own journeys through secondary school. I believe that any student, with the right teaching methods and a bit of patience, can develop a real aptitude and passion for maths and excel in highly valued skills like critical reasoning.
I hope to be able to guide students, who may not be currently confident in their quantitative abilities, to break through their hesitations and become smarter and more adept individuals.

About the lesson

As the Leaving Cert curriculum is moving towards a focus on the understanding of knowledge (as demonstrated by this year’s infamous Maths Paper 1), my lessons will emphasise critical thinking and the methods involved with solving problems, as opposed to solely finding the answer.
To do this, I have developed a program that mixes generic questions with more challenging, conceptual problems that are not strictly ‘on the course’, gathered from harder Olympiad and A-Level material.

Lessons will be between 60 - 90 minutes and typically come in weekly intervals, with worksheets and questions being provided.
After a few lessons on a given topic (usually 4), students will receive a personalised review to summarise progress/work-ons on that specific topic.

Having taught JC Maths to 2nd/3rd years, and LC Maths and Physics to 5th/6th years in the past, I have found that a system of continuously solving tougher-than-expected questions, with regular reviews, as the best way to ensure a true retention of information

Vincent was a brilliant maths tutor for my son leading up to his summer exams.
Not only was he clear and concise with how he explained maths concepts to my son, but he was also incredibly patient and was willing to stay longer or provide more questions in order to ensure my son Daniel fully understood the topic at hand.
Overall, Vincent was a wonderful and easy to-talk-to tutor and I could not recommend someone better.
Definitely will be calling him up again when Daniel reaches 5th and 6th year
