About Syed Amir

I am a First-Class Actuarial Mathematics graduate from Queen Mary University of London. I enjoy helping students realise maths is not about being naturally “smart”, but about learning the right approach and practising in a supportive environment.

I have experience working with younger learners and understand that many students feel anxious about maths or worry about getting answers wrong. I am patient, calm and encouraging, and I always adapt lessons to the student’s pace so they feel comfortable asking questions.

I particularly enjoy helping students who have lost confidence in maths and want to improve before exams. Seeing a student go from avoiding questions to attempting them independently is the most rewarding part of tutoring.

I also completed the current 9–1 GCSE curriculum myself, so I am familiar with the style of questions and mark schemes students are expected to work with today. This helps me guide students not only in understanding topics but also in how to structure answers to gain marks in exams.

Outside tutoring I enjoy gym training and chess, which help develop discipline, focus and problem-solving skills — qualities I try to encourage in my students as well.

About the lesson

I focus on helping students understand maths in a clear and calm way rather than memorising steps. Many students I work with feel they are “just bad at maths”, but in reality they have simply missed key foundations. My aim is to rebuild confidence and improve grades.

I have previously tutored a Year 6 student weekly across a full academic year, working through mistakes from schoolwork and homework to strengthen weak topics and exam technique. I also worked as a science ambassador teaching primary school children in small groups, which helped me learn how to explain ideas in simple, engaging ways suitable for younger learners.

Lessons are typically 1 hour. We begin by identifying problem areas, then practise together using questions similar to GCSE exams. I encourage students to talk through their thinking so I can correct misunderstandings early. I also show useful methods for checking answers to reduce common exam mistakes.

I teach KS2, KS3 and GCSE maths. I am a First-Class Actuarial Mathematics graduate from Queen Mary University of London. I offer online lessons and in-person sessions locally in London.
