About Fred
I've loved the world of physics and mathematics for as long as I can remember. Teaching these subjects, when done right, can show others just how fascinating the world around us is - I believe the beauty of the physical world is enhanced by understanding it, and that's why I love teaching so much. Before going to University, I was so excited to do well that I bought myself a textbook (introduction to electrodynamics, D.J. Griffiths). I spent my gap year struggling to study from this textbook (I later found out it contains 2nd/3rd/4th year content). I know the value that comes with having someone you can rely on to help explain concepts and solve problems - I certainly wish I had that someone during my gap year! I'm also not a complete nerd (just mostly one); I like learning new cooking recipes, going to the gym, and painting miniatures.

I like to teach the thought process / philosophy that is utilised when solving problems. The classic "when am I ever going to need the quadratic formula?" is a very valuable question that should be answered with honesty - it is profoundly useful in the world of maths and physics but it is likely pointless if you aspire to be a chef for example (though I would love to see a counterexample to this claim)! Once the nature of a problem is understood, I believe the best thing is practice and repetition. I typically ask what subjects the client would like to cover before the lesson and dedicate some time to planning the lesson and trying to come up with multiple questions which (hopefully) don't get too stale. The typical length of a session is 1 hr, though I'm happy to go up to 2hrs. I recently graduated from the University of Bath with a first-class Master's degree in Physics with Astrophysics, and have achieved an A*A*A in A-level Maths, Physics, and Chemistry respectively. I'm currently taking part in active research on Neutron star physics which I will be publishing soon. I tutored a friend of mine once to twice a week in mid-2020 on his A-level Maths - he went from achieving a grade C to obtaining an A in just 5 months. The lessons would be for people studying Maths or Physics at an A-level standard; typical age range 16-18; I'm happy to do lessons for people who are struggling with A-levels or lessons for people who are thriving and want extra practice to prepare for, say, studying Physics at University.
