About Dawn

I am a postgraduate research student at Swansea University, with good experience of literature from the Medieval period to the present day. I specialise in literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, and can offer expertise in all major written forms (i.e. prose, poetry, drama). I graduated with first-class honours from the University of Nottingham in 2013, and have since worked professionally as a Researcher and Editing Assistant for journalist and author, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, as well as for a former President of the Museums Association. I am author of a published undergraduate essay, credited as research assistant in a widely-available book on English history and encounters with multiculturalism, and have recently given a well-received paper at a biannual gender-based conference.

I can offer English Literature tuition for secondary-school pupils through to undergraduate students, and indeed anyone of any age interested in the subject, or in adult education. Lessons will be engaging, and will seek to display my personal passion for English in the hope that the student will discover their own.

About the lesson

Lessons will be informative, and fun. I will first ask the student (or parent) for their personal aims and desired outcomes for our lessons (e.g. whether we will be working towards a test, exam, oral presentation, coursework, a particular written style or period, dissertation or thesis techniques, or even simply to master a particular text). These will provide the basis for my lesson preparation. As well as this, and dependent on the student's needs, I will request information relating to the student's curriculum or required-reading, and will fully acquaint myself with the relevant assessment procedures and texts to be covered. Each lesson will be carefully structured, and will include practices such as close-analysis readings of shorter passages to really decode the literary text (be it novel, poem, or play) and gain a truly nuanced understanding of how the text works. We will also explore the wider historical contexts of the text, which usually leads to exciting and enlightening discoveries for the student. In short, my lessons will always be about donning your detective's cap and unlocking the hidden meanings of the text, and pursuing high marks in the process!
